Now, Charlie went through the motions of debriefing the jump and small talk with the ground crew, while the other skydivers arrived back. The supervisor tried to give him a certificate, but his raised eyebrows put paid to that, he wasn’t a rookie. He would have made Becca take hers of course, if she’d done the bloody jump. Suddenly he was seething again, which took him to his car and out of the airfield at a fair clip.

He fumed the entire hour’s drive to her flat while he rehearsed his rant. And it needed rehearsing, not for smoothness of delivery, but to set limits for himself, so he didn’t completely fly off the handle. He was winding himself up, and probably blowing it out of proportion, but this was out of order. He’d organised the entire thing and emailed her the details. It wasn’t like she had a proper job that couldn’t be rearranged, for fuck sake. At the very least, she could have called him.

Charlie slammed the car door behind him and stalked up the path, raising his hand angrily over his shoulder to activate the remote locking. He considered pressing the bell, but that felt too genteel for his mood, so he hammered on the door with his fist instead.

It went unanswered. Which made him even crosser. She thought she had something more important to do. More important than this, which he was in the shit for. He stuck his face against the lounge window and was sure he could see some light from the rear of the flat. Irritation hitting melting point, he poked the bell button, but was met with silence. Typical. How hard was it to change a bell battery? Hands on hips, he looked about, working out what to do next. Sense said he should walk away and calm the hell down before sending her a strongly worded email. She hadn’t read a single text he’d sent her from the aerodrome and she hadn’t picked up any of his calls nor returned his voice messages. His eyes fell to the lock and his mind to the bundle of keys in his pocket. He had a key to the door. He was the landlord, so he was within his rights. That said, Becca had some tenant’s rights, plus he’d made her a promise.

Seeing as she was ignoring his communications, he squared it in his head that he’d just pop in and leave a note on the table. That way she’d know how hacked off he was with her. He slid the key into the lock … and stopped. No. At best, it was passive aggressive, at worst it was creepy, a gross violation of her privacy. He leaned his head against the glass and pulled the key back out. He was angry. And disappointed. He found it easier to manage this day, scattering the ashes, when Becca was with him. Their bickering deflected any sadness. Not that he intended telling her that.

Huffing, he strode back down the path and rummaged in the car’s glove compartment to find some paper and a pen.
